Department of History

Prev | Next

The University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

DESCRIPTION:

The study of history has been part of the curriculum of the University of Melbourne since it began teaching in 1854. Under Sir Ernest Scott, Professor of History from 1914 to 1936, the Department pioneered teaching and research in Australian history. His successor, Professor Max Crawford and former members such as Manning Clark, Hugh Stretton, Geoffrey Blainey, Ken Inglis, Greg Dening and Lloyd Robson, have left a lasting impact on our understanding of the past. Previous members of the Department have also established substantial bequests to the University library which have also been invaluable in building comprehensive history collections at the University. The Department of History comprises more than thirty academic and administrative staff, and a similar number of part-time teaching and research staff.
